TLC Wig Closet

Teresa Lane Compton Memorial Wig Closet The Teresa Lane Compton Memorial Wig Closet, on the Third Floor of MRHC, is operated by Ashley and Lexie Lerblance as a place to help women who have lost their hair to chemotherapy. Lexie, 17, started the project for 4-H after witnessing the struggle and recovery of her mom Ashley, a pharmacist for MRHC. The room (named for Ashley’s late mother, Teresa) is a private tastefully decorated and comfortable space where women meet 1-on-1 with someone who has experienced hair loss. They talk about hair color and length, learn how to care for a wig, use a wig cap, or stylishly wrap a scarf. The room, donated by the MRHC foundation, is stocked floor to ceiling with wigs, turans, hats, scarves and even prostheses, nearly all of it purchased with donations and gifts.

W.E. Allford Dialysis Fund

We primarily serve an aging patient population of retired individuals who suffer from numerous chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. The patients receive treatments three days a week, lasting from three to four hours per session. Some patients experience side effects such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, and cramping during treatment. Appetites and energy levels are often affected by the disease and lengthy dialysis sessions.

Patients have special dietary restrictions to keep them healthy. These restrictions limit favorite foods such as dairy products, chocolate, and nuts. In addition, patients are asked to limit phosphorus in their diet which is prevalent in our food supply as well as sodium, potassium, and fluids. The renal diet is very limiting and hard to follow. The only foods that are encouraged are high protein foods such as meat and eggs. By following these restrictions, patients dramatically increase their health outcomes and effectiveness of treatments. However, the options patients are left with are rarely convenient and they struggle multiple times each day to remain in compliance with the dietary requirements.

The goal of the Dietary Rewards Program is to offer incentives to encourage dialysis patients who are facing huge obstacles in their healthcare needs. We are seeking donations of items, funds, or gift certificates that we can provide to patients when they successfully meet their strict dietary standards. We would be very excited to have an opportunity to sit down with you and visit more about plans to help these patients. Please consider partnering with us as we seek to offer encouragement to patients with special healthcare needs that will improve their quality of life. Together, we can make their lives a little brighter with even the smallest of rewards and incentives.
